Senior Cats Like to Move It, Move It.

As your cat starts to age, he’ll need exercise to stay healthy. Since the ultimate goal is to get him moving, using toys is often the best tactic, particularly the fishing rod-type toys or small items your cat can chase. If you don’t have those around, try using common household items. Luckily, cats are curious and typically won’t turn their nose up at interesting household items.

A few household tricks:

1. Leave a large paper bag out for your cat. It just might keep him busy for hours.
2. Make him a scratching post. It’s good for your cat and your furniture.
3. Give him a cardboard tube to roll around in. It’s entertainment for both of you.

If these tricks don’t do it for your cat, try motivating him with food:

1. Fill a plastic soda bottle with dry cat food, leave the lid off or cut a small hole in the side to allow the kibble to fall out during play.
2. Place dry cat food in a brown paper lunch bag and loosely roll the end closed.
3. Use a feeding ball.
4. Hide food in a paper towel roll.
5. Place food under an empty laundry basket.
6. Hide food in crumbled up pieces of paper.

If you decide to use food, remember to feed your cat a little less during regular feedings to avoid being counter-productive! With any food, either human or pet, safe handling procedures should be used. Be sure to wash hands, bowls and surfaces with soap and water after coming in contact with food.
