Have You Kept Your New Year’s Resolution for You and Your Senior Dog?
Have you been keeping your New Year’s resolution to eat right and exercise? If not, there’s still time to get healthy and include your senior dog too! There are a lot of activities that you can do together! Your older dog may not be able to keep up like he used to, so start slowly and gradually increase activity that matches his age and ability. Remember, as your dog ages, his activity level will need to decrease.
Healthy Exercise Habits for Senior Dogs
Older dogs love variety. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and try new things:
-
Create an obstacle course for both you and your dog to complete
-
Play a game of follow the leader around your neighborhood – and if your dog is up for it, jog while playing
-
Take your dog for 2-3 shorter daily walks as opposed to one longer one
After spending time outdoors, be sure to check your dog's coat, ears, eyes and paws for ticks and other pesky insects. Besides regular exercise, your senior dog also needs to eat healthy, nutrient-rich, natural food for complete and balanced nutrition.
Consistency is the key when establishing a new exercise routine and diet. The most important factor in the care of your senior dog is to identify his individual needs and abilities. By doing this, he should remain both happy and healthy.
